Jesus doesn’t deny that Mary is blessed. However, He goes on to say that any one of us is more blessed than Mary if we hear God’s word and obey it.
First Sunday of Advent 2018
Christmas is not about having the perfect family, but inviting the perfect guest.
A Few Points of Interest:
- Jesus had brothers and sisters. (v46)
- Spiritual family is more important than physical family to Jesus. (v48,50)
- Obedience is the primary requirement Jesus gives for belonging. (v50)
- Jesus doesn’t seek to dishonor earthly family, but to give God priority.
Acceptance—No matter who you are or where you’ve been.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5.8)

Elevating Family Values to Dangerous Heights
We are prone to put family first; we are supposed to put God First.
We Think Jesus Came Only to Bring Peace...
...But He says he came to bring a sword. What can this mean? Simply this: the existence of evil—even in families—necessitates conflict. Event the best family is broken beyond our ability to repair. The politics of the family must take a back seat to the calling of the kingdom. We must be careful not to romanticize the memory of our family members.
