• The Law of the Empty Hand (Matthew 14.13-21)

    You Deserve a Break Today

    If ever anyone had a good excuse to take a break, it was Jesus in this passage. Yet in spite of His physical and emotional weariness He continued to pour himself out and to teach his disciples to do so as well.

    “You give them something to eat.” (Matthew 14.16)

    The Law of the Empty Hand

    To experience the fullness of God’s blessings  TO and THROUGH you, you must first let go of everything you hold dear.

    It only takes a small wrinkle to derail a great train, and a drop of poison to taint the whole well.

    Passover yeast, the widow’s mites, the rich young ruler — these all teach the importance of complete commitment, and the danger of clinging to even the smallest things.

    Put conversely: “The Law of WITHHELD Blessings”

    “That which you cling to is all that you get.”

    “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” (John 12.24)

    What Are You Withholding?

    SLEEP? (Are you too tired to be a blessing?)

    “Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping.” (Mark 13.35-36)

    MONEY? (Are you too poor to be a blessing?)

    “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6.10)

    TIME? (Are you too busy to be a blessing?)

    “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.” (Romans 13.11)

    “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”(Ephesians 5.15-16)

    Disclaimer: Rest Did Come

    Heavy sacrifices are not the daily norm. God reveals our true level of commitment in those moments when we are asked to give more than we think we have, but those trials eventually come to pass.

    Bringing it Home

    What excuses do you find yourself making when God calls you to be a blessing?  Open your hand, lay those petty things down, and let God fill you unimaginably more than you ever dreamed!
