• Knowing God - Part 1

    Hello Ladies,

In the next few months I will be writing on the Hebrew names of God. The women’s ministry theme this year has been based on Psalms 46:10 (and other related verses) that states to “Be still and Know He is God.” At our last retreat we studied about getting to know God by getting to know His character. One way to get to know His character is by studying His name from the word of God. I will be pulling excerpts from a few books written on this subject as well as scripture for us to meditate on. At the bottom of this email I will have a list of the books I mostly will be using and/or recommendations for you to pick up and do a study in your quiet times. God has really been showing himself to me through the study of these Hebrew names of God. I am not going to go into the Hebrew part of the name in depth. I want to focus mostly on God’s character and how knowing Him deeper will affect our lives and enriches our daily walk with Him. If you have any questions feel free to post them here on the blog for all the women to be able to answer. This can be a great time to unify us and get to know each other better. If you would like to talk in private please email or call me. I will love to walk along side you to find the answers that ease your curiosity or confusion.

Today let me start with…. Why should we get to know His name?

Because He takes care of us…

    Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe.

Beloved, where do you run in time of need? When the hounds of trouble, worry, and fear pursue you; when the dogs of temptation, corruption, and evil seek to overtake you; when your energy is spent; when weakness saps you; when you feel you cannot run any longer, where do you turn?  Do you turn to your protector, the One who stands with arms opened wide, waiting for you to come and bury yourself in the security of all He is? (1)

Infinitely holy. Intimately personal. Our God wants not only to be worshiped but to be known. In 1 Chronicles 16:10-11, David urged his people:

Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. (3)

In the sixty-six books of the Bible that were written over approximately fifteen hundred years, God revealed various names that reflect His multifaceted character and infinitely diverse ways. To the outcast Hagar, He was El Roi, the God who sees. To the needy Abraham, He was Yahweh Yireh, the Lord will Provide, To the rock-toting teen warrior David, He was El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One. In each of these instances, God revealed a new aspect of His being to show that He was sufficient to take care of every need, all powerful to take care of every foe, and all present to take care of every circumstance. Because of His infinite love…

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1

God demonstrates His desire to know and to be known by us. He is a God who reveals Himself so that we can know Him personally. (4)

“Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.” Isaiah 50:10

Lastly we should study the names of God because of the inherent greatness of His name…

    Psalm 8:1 says:

    O LORD, our Lord,
How majestic is Thy name in all the earth…
In Psalm 48:10, the psalmist states:
As is Thy name O God,
So is Thy praise it the ends of the earth;…
The psalmist Asaph frequently begins his praise of God with a reference to His name. Look, for example, at the first verse of Psalm 75:
“We give thanks to Thee, O God, we give thanks,
    For Thy name is near;
    Men declare Thy wondrous works.”
